Obelisk I is a piece about connection. Initially, there is a conceptual contrast in the juxtaposition of an ancient, monumental form within the modern city of Chicago; however, the traditional obelisk has been altered significantly to become contemporarily relevant.
Throughout history, peoples across the globe have been fascinated with these forms for the spiritual, historical, and astronomical content they carry. Contrary to the early monolithic obelisks -- whose value was directly related to the rarity and fragility of a single sculpted stone in that size and shape -- this modern obelisk is clearly constructed of common materials in multiple parts. The piece derives its value from the beauty found in its iconic form, meticulous craft, and public presentation.
The plumb bob which slowly sways in the center of the piece is used to portray balance and harmony. The solid, skyward form of the historical obelisk has now been opened, and a long, thin string brings the whole piece back down to earth, only to be lifted again by its rigid steel frame and suspended wood blocks.
Obelisk I connects past with present, religion with science, and earth with sky.
